ASHWIN GORE
My time at atyp started in 2002 when I took the Acting Intensive workshops. After a few workshops, I became aware of the productions atyp stages throughout the year, and so in 2003 I took part in the devised production of Borders directed by Chris Ryan. The show dealt with the theme of 'lines in the sand', and the borders and boundaries we have to face in life.
In 2004, I performed in my second production with atyp, this time a physical theatre show in conjunction with Legs on the Wall called Back in Your Box. Directed by Brian Carbee and Debra Baton, the show was challenging and incredibly enjoyable to perform.
In 2005 I landed the lead role of 'Jamal' in atyp's major production for the year, Boy Overboard, directed by Timothy Jones and Becky Chapman. The show performed at Parramatta's Riverside Theatres over a very successful 2-week season. Having been somewhat of an amateur soccer player, I had to quickly develop my football skills to play a soccer-loving Afghan refugee.
Also in 2005, I was part of the volunteer and performing ensemble at the atyp fundraiser headed by Baz Luhrman at the Trackdown Soundstage at Fox Studios Sydney.
In 2006, atyp took Boy Overboard on tour to South Australia where we performed successful seasons at the Adelaide Fringe Festival and in the city of Port Lincoln. The 2-week tour was one of my highlights with atyp and an incredible life experience.
In 2007, I was part of the ensemble cast of Kaleidoscope, a performance which was the opening ceremony of the 2007 Oxfam International Youth Partnerships event in Sydney. The performance included physical theatre, dance and singing, and we were joined on stage by circus performers, musicians and capoeira dancers. Meeting so many young people from around the world was an incredible experience and I am very thankful to atyp for the opportunity.
In 2008, I was once again part of a diverse and unique production as I performed in Meryl Tankard's VX18504. The theatre and dance show performed at CarriageWorks in an incredibly successful season. The show comprised theatre and dance. Training in contemporary dance was an amazing learning experience, and working with Meryl Tankard was a delight!
In December 2008 I moved to Los Angeles to further my acting career. I have been living here for 7 months now, and have so far had an incredible time. I have filmed several short films, with lead roles in most, had a supporting role on a mock-reality TV show called Operation Repo, and a co-star role on a pilot for network giant CBS called Ace in the Hole, starring comedian Adam Carolla.
In between roles I have been auditioning, networking, meeting lots of interesting people, working as an entertainer at kids' birthday parties, and learning the American entertainment business. Non-acting highlights have included being at Olivia Newton-John and Leeza Gibbons' Oscars Party, making contacts within LA's social circles which has given me the opportunity to attend ritzy mansion parties and guaranteed entry into LA's most exclusive nightclubs, and of course visiting the array of theme parks.
As episodic season here in the US starts to pick up, and with the SAG agreement finally settled (paving the way for more feature films), I'm sure there will be a lot more exciting news to come in the next few months...
