JESSICA TUCKWELL
Jessica graduated from the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) in 2007 with a Graduate Diploma in Dramatic Art in Directing, after completing a B. Arts (Philosophy) in 2004, at the University of Sydney. In 2009 she directed
Ruby Moon by Matt Cameron and Reb Cribb’s
The Return at Newtown Theatre,
Lost on Monster Island at NIDA,
The Peach Season by Debra Oswald and was the Assistant Director on
The Removalists at Sydney Theatre Company. In the same year, Jessica was a tutor at World Interplay, in Cairns. In 2008 Jessica directed
The Soldier and the Thief Wait on a Bridge Over the River Thames While Oblivion Waves Hello at The Old Fitzroy Theatre and Noelle Janaczewska’s
Duet With a Dictionary, which won the Movie Extra Judges Award at the Short and Sweet Gala Final. At NIDA she directed
Little Hitler’s Ode to an Austrian Bentwood by Maxine Mellor, adapted and directed new Australian work
On Top of the Mountain, facilitated a devising project based on Fuente Ovejuna and was Assistant Director on
Sweet Charity and Brecht’s
The Private Life of the Master Race. Jessica has been tutoring acting, directing and writing in Sydney and regional areas since 2007. Jessica was involved with
atyp from 2002-2006. She was first introduced to
atyp through acting workshops, which lead her to audition for Debra Oswald’s
Skate in 2003. She was offered a role and went on tour with the production to various towns in South-West NSW. She was also in the return season of
Skate in 2005, which toured to The Belfast Festival. In 2006 Jessica was the assistant director on
Craving, a devised project performed in the Richard Wherrett Studio, Sydney Theatre, and was Production Assistant on
3 Little Fears. She wrote
Marmite and directed
Bird, for rehearsed readings at the Old Fitzroy Theatre, which came out of an
atyp workshop with Peter Kingston. She performed in Hilary Bell’s
Light Years, directed by Lucy Bell. Also in 2006 she represented
atyp at National Studio, working with Lindy Davies and Gavin Robbins and meeting current
atyp Artistic Director, Fraser Corfield! Jessica attended many workshops and master classes, as well as being involved in the development of Debra Oswald’s
Stories In the Dark and Noelle Janaczewska’s
This Territory, assisting with the technical operation of
The Paper War and with the preparation and management of the
atyp Christmas Angels and performing at the
atyp 40th birthday celebration,
The Big Bash. She returned in 2008 for the reading of
Shedding for the Fresh Ink National Young Writers’ Program Staged Readings. Most importantly, Jess won a Silver Coat Hanger award for Sexiest Female at the
atyp Christmas party two years in a row.
