MICHAEL CUTRUPI
I started at atyp in 2007 with a camera class led by the amazing director, Michael James Rowland, and I was hooked. I loved working with these people, who enjoyed doing what I enjoyed doing.
In 2008, I was introduced to the director, Kate Gaul, who encouraged me to audition for Phaedra's Love. I got the lead role and it was the most challenging and exciting 7 weeks of my career. I learnt a lot and met some fantastic people.
In 2009, I auditioned and was accepted for the atyp Young Artist Program, in which I spent the year working with some amazing people, including Stefo Nantsou, Tom Lycos and Brigid Kitchen from Zeal Theatre Company; Lachlan Philpott, awarding-winning writer; Lee Lewis, director; Matt Whittet, actor and playwright; Shane Jones, director and movement coach, and many others. This experience was key to my career development. I am still working with my fellow Young Artists from the program.
During the last 12 months I have worked and studied with Philippe Gaulier in Berlin and Anne Bogart in New York, thanks to grants I applied for with assistance from staff at atyp. In 2010 I have already produced and performed in a highly successful and critically-acclaimed cabaret theatre piece at the Adelaide Fringe Festival (Bienvenue a Brelville), I am in pre-production with my next project which is a world premiere in collaboration with German writer, Laura Naumann; I am working with Sydney Theatre Company on People of the Soil, a touring teaching initiative to rural NSW with Zeal Theatre Company; have established my own theatre and production company, The Collective; and I'm still only 21.
My experiences at atyp were a part of my journey so far and they will continue to be as I begin working as manager of the new Under the Wharf forums which bring young and emerging artists together to pool resources and meet their aspirations.
