Fresh Ink

With atyp’s strong record of nurturing young writers, we know what it takes to help you break through. Fresh Ink is for writers aged 18-26, hungry for a career in theatre. The program helps you build skills and the confidence to step into the industry.
Fresh Ink matches emerging writers with experienced mentors who help bring out your own voice. We also offer a range of writing workshops and residencies to meet other like-minded creatives and skill up. When your scripts are ready, we support you through creative development workshops and public readings to link you to other companies and artists in the theatre industry. Fresh Ink identifies, nurtures and spotlights the next generation of Australian writers. National recognition has already come to two of the young writers from the Fresh Ink program. Melbourne-based Amelia Roper has had her work, Big Sky Town, published and studied as part of the Victorian secondary schools’ curriculum. Brisbane-based Fresh Ink writer Maxine Mellor has been commissioned by Queensland Theatre Company, and one of her plays is about to be published by Playlab Press. Maxine was commissioned by atyp in 2009 to develop a new work for young audiences.
Fresh Ink: Core Writers’ Program
The core writers’ program involves five Sydney writers in a nine-month program. Combining writing master classes, a mentorship, regular visits to theatre and participation in the National Studio writing residency, Fresh Ink also offers opportunities to have your work seen on stage. The program begins with INKubator, an intense 24-hour adrenalin-fuelled play generator that introduces the writers to atyp audiences. The program ends with staged public readings of your play, and introduces writers to the industry.
(In 2009 our staged readings will take place at The SBW Stables Theatre on Nov 29. Come and check them out!)
Mentorship is the core of Fresh Ink. Established writers mentor Fresh Ink writers by guiding them through the writing process. Mentors provide advice on specific scripts and the wider industry, and can offer valuable input about managing your work and practice. During the year writers create a new play with the guidance of a carefully-matched mentor. Current mentors include: Vanessa Bates, Becky Chapman, Fraser Corfield, Lally Katz, Debra Oswald, Lachlan Philpott, Sam Strong and Matt Whittet.
Fresh Ink: National Young Writers’ Studio
In Nov 2010, 15 promising young writers from across Australia will join our Fresh Ink writers for a week-long orgy of ideas, master classes, collaborative experimentation and sharing of stories. Three top Australian writing tutors will inspire the mayhem.
Live-in residencies bring writers together for intense focus and rigorous exploration of their craft. While building skills, participants exchange ideas, develop networks and find inspiration away from the distractions of their lives.
Held at Bundanon, NSW, a stunning property bequeathed to Australian artists by Arthur and Yvonne Boyd and a Mecca for inspiring creativity.
