Q) What level workshop should I do?
A)
The rule of thumb is to never be afraid to do the same workshop more than once: every time you work with a new group you learn new skills and gain different insights. Once you have done at least 2 workshops you should look out for workshops labelled 'advanced' or seek out "audition opportunities" in the brochure. Masterclasses are open to people who have considerable experience both at atyp and outside and are aimed at those who are really committed to developing their craft.

Q) Do I have to audition to be in the workshops?
A) No. We try to make all workshops open to everyone: if you are in the right age group and you feel up for it, you can join in. New people join workshops throughout the year. The exception would be that sometimes auditions will be held for special projects or workshops ending with performances.

Q) Are your workshops different from school drama?
A)
Yes. All our workshops are taught by practicing industry professionals so while you learn skills and develop your understanding, you will be learning about the professional side of a career in the creative arts. In addition, at atyp we do not follow an education syllabus: each tutor works from the needs of the group so that together you are responsible for pushing your creative boundaries.

Q) I've only done school drama. How do I know if I am ready for a particular class?
A) If in doubt give us a call to discuss you situation.

Q) I've done one creative drama class, what should I do now?
A) Another one! Remember that only practice makes perfect and there are always things to learn in every class.

Q) Can I get into an older age group, even though I'm not quite the right age?
A) Only if you are going to become the right age during the season for which you are enrolling. the workshop age groups are selected carefully and specifically to suit your age group.  The content of the workshops deal with issues relating to specific age groups and we want all our participants to get the best experience without feeling inhibited by being a group with people much older or younger than themselves.

Q) Can I come and experience a class to see if I like it?
A) No. We feel that you need to try a series of workshops before making a judgement about whether it is for you and for insurance reasons we need everyone who joins in to have enrolled in the class. We do have at least one open day each year you can attend and we encourage you to visit us at the wharf to meet our staff before enrolling if you have any concerns.

Q) Where do atyp tutors come from?
A) All atyp tutors are working professional artists. Some have trained at tertiary drama schools. Others have had many years experience in the professional performing arts industry. Some started at atyp – just like you.

Q) When I become a member how soon do I start getting the discount on workshops?
A) Straightaway. When you elect to pay the $40 membership you automatically take the discounted member price. Take advantage of an annual saving of $320 when you book into every holiday and term season. That is $40 OFF every workshop during Holidays and/or Term.
