atyp's On the Road program aims to improve access for all young Australians to share their stories and participate in the arts regardless of economic or geographical barriers. atyp On the Road takes our high quality workshop and performance activities to young people across Australia who live outside the Sydney metropolitan area.
"I found out that if you can trust yourself, you can find out what you can do inside yourself." (Participant, Operation Pilbara Regional Residency WA)
Examples of On the Road programs include:
WORKSHOPS/DRAMA CAMPS: short and long term. atyp tutors work intensively with young people over, for example, a school holiday period. Workshops develop a performance for the final session. This model can also involve workshops in a number of communities throughout a region.
CITY/COUNTRY EXCHANGE: A group of young people from the city are teamed with a group of young people from the region. They work and stay together, one week in the region and one week in the city. A performance results based on the experiences of living in the two locations.
CREATING A PLAY: A writer joins atyp tutors to work with young people in a region and writes a play based on their concerns and experiences. The resulting play can be rehearsed and performed in the region with local youth or rehearsed in the city and travel to the region for a performance tour.
PRODUCTIONS: An atyp production performs throughout a region. atyp aims to tour regionally at least once every two years.
Partnerships with local organisations are essential to the successful delivery of atyp On the Road programs. Recent examples:
Operation Pilbara drama camp: Partnership with Black Swan Theatre Company, Perth WA www.bstc.com.au/go/on-the-road
Ties that Bind: Partnership with Outback Theatre for Young People, Hay NSW www.outbacktheatre.com/
Tennant Creek NT: Partnership with Nyinkka Nyunyu Cultural Centre and the Youth Development Unit. www.nyinkkanyunyu.com.au
For residential projects, atyp aims for a minimum three-year commitment to an area to promote true creative exchange and leave a legacy of skills-training amongst local youth and arts workers.
If you would like to talk to atyp about running a project in your region or hosting a performance, please contact Tim Jones, Artistic Director.
