Australian Theatre for Young People (atyp) charges into it’s 2008 performance season with a powerful devised physical theatre piece, Battlegrounds directed by Lee Lewis (director Love-Lies-Bleeding, 2007, STC).
This collaboration between Lee Lewis and atyp, will centre upon the notion of the child soldier. The young cast of 16 atyp members, ranging in ages from 13 -18, will work with Lee to explore, develop and draw from inspiration, using Shakespeare’s Henry plays and real life accounts, to give a voice to these young soldiers they have never met, but carry messages of an unfamiliar reality as they fight for existence and survival through conflict and war. Kyle Rowling from Sydney Stage Combat School, will work with the young cast in fight and movement choreography, to further develop this powerful physical theatre piece, as told through language and movement.
“ I would like to give you a message.
Please do your best to tell the world what is happening to us children.
So that other children don’t have to pass through this violence. ”
A 15-YEAR OLD GIRL WHO ESCAPED FROM THE LORD’S RESISTANCE ARMY IN UGANDA
This production is an exploration and a journey for the cast, the crew and their audience. It’s honest, confronting and thought-provoking. From the front-lines to the theatre, these stories need to be told and most of all need to be heard, so these young and innocent lives and brave soldiers are never forgotten, with the hope that one day these same children will be protected from conflict and war, and not participate in it.
