Book and lyrics by Steven Sater, Music by Duncan Sheik.
Based on the original play by Frank Wederkind.
Director Mitchell Butel
Praise for ATYP's Spring Awakening:
'Butel's production is taut, energised...powered by solidly kicking band (under Lucy Bermingham) and Amy Campbell's raw-edged choreography, bristle with an energy that rocks the ATYP Studio to its wooden piles. Recommended.'
Jason Blake, Sydney Morning Herald
★ ★ ★ ★ '(Mitchell) Butel’s Spring Awakening feels like no other production that has gone before. It’s frank, it’s beautiful...musical director Lucy Bermingham leads a tight band, and along with the actors creates musical theatre magic...'
Cassie Tongue, Time Out Sydney
"This is only the second musical Butel has directed...and once again he proves to have a sure and sensitive touch, drawing heartfelt, affecting performances from his young cast...helming a production that really rocks and at the same time moves you with the authenticity of its raw emotion."
Jo Litson, Scene and Heard
An electrifying fusion of rebellion, sexual awakening and rock and roll.
ATYP is about to deliver a sexy, sweaty, slice of rock ‘n’ roll musical mayhem to Sydney that will blow the minds of audiences lucky enough to get a ticket in the strictly limited two week season.
Award winning director and ATYP Alumnus, Mitchell Butel (Violet) returns to direct the Broadway smash hit SPRING AWAKENING – THE MUSICAL featuring the hottest young cast to hit a stage this year. These are the musical theatre stars of tomorrow, ready to tear up the stage today.
ATYP is no stranger to this controversial, sexually provocative oft banned work written over 100 years ago. Spring Awakening was first produced in 1984 and then again in 1989 and featured actors across the two productions including Nicole Kidman, Felix Williamson (The Great Gatsby, Avalon Now), Morgan (Morganics) Lewis and many others.
There are some stories that remain current generation after generation. When the stage play of Spring Awakening was first produced in Germany in 1891 the references to masturbation, abortion, rape and suicide saw it banned. Fast forward 116 years and the musical adaptation scandalised audiences on Broadway. Yes, the behaviour of teenagers has been shocking people for hundreds of years.
Let’s see whether audiences in 2016 are still appalled by the revelation that teenagers spend an awful lot of time thinking about sex!
