The Blake–Beckett Trust Original
A new playwriting commission

Commission Opportunity
The Blake–Beckett Trust Original is an annual national playwriting commission presented by ATYP under the ATYP Originals program.
What is offered
Commission of a full-length original work for live theatrical performance
The work must centre on characters aged 13–26
$15,000 AUD commission fee for the winning playwright
The winner receives a complete commission process, including dramaturgy and the development of 4–5 drafts with ATYP
Two runners-up receive $5,000 AUD each, and will work toward a first draft with feedback from ATYP
Submission requirements
Applicants must submit the following supporting materials in one PDF document:
A two-page synopsis (12pt font, 1.5 spacing) – This should outline the full story, including any major turning points or spoilers. What is the action that drives the work forward?
A character list – Provide names, ages and a short description of each of the main characters.
An impetus statement (max 500 words) – Tell us what sparked this idea and why you feel compelled to tell this story now.
A writing sample of no more than 10 pages (from a separate work to the one being pitched)
Selection process
The ATYP Artistic Team assesses all applications in the first instance. Three works are then shortlisted and provided to the Blake Beckett Trust. Final selection is made jointly by the Blake Beckett Trust with advice from the ATYP Artistic Director.

Shortlist finalised: Early May
Winner announced: End of May
Eligibility
Playwrights aged 26 and under, or within the first five years of professional practice
Co-collaborative applications accepted
Australian citizens or permanent residents
Conditions
All submitted work must be original and unpublished
Adaptations of literary works will not be considered
Commission timelines and development milestones will be agreed upon after selection
The award may not be offered in a given year if a suitable standard is not met
Artists may be required to participate in reasonable promotional activity
Auditions
Inclusion is at the heart of ATYP. We acknowledge that an understanding of one’s own identity is an ongoing journey, especially for young people. ATYP will never ask you to define your identity unless you feel comfortable doing so. We welcome all applicants who feel a connection with the below work(s).
